Electrifying Finals Wrap Up the ITTF-Americas Cup 2026
The final day of the ITTF-Americas Cup 2026 delivered thrilling matches and confirmed continued dominance at the top of Pan American table tennis.
Women’s Singles Semi-Finals:
The women’s singles action opened with a highly anticipated clash between four-time U.S. Olympian Lily Zhang and five-time Canadian Olympian Mo Zhang. Coming into the match, their head-to-head record was perfectly balanced at 8 wins apiece, promising a tight battle. However, this time Lily Zhang controlled the match from start to finish, winning convincingly 4–0. Mo appeared slightly below her usual form, and Lily capitalized quickly.
Another major surprise followed as Amy Wang defeated World No. 20 Bruna Takahashi (Brazil) 4–1. Many expected the defending champion to return to the finals, but Amy delivered a confident and composed performance. Historically dominated by Bruna (with roughly 70% of their previous matches favoring the Brazilian), Amy’s breakthrough win made it clear that this year’s finals would look very different from last year.
Men’s Singles Semi-Finals:
On the men’s side, the semifinals were dominated by the region’s top two players: Kanak Jha (USA) and Hugo Calderano (Brazil).
Kanak Jha defeated Eugene Wang (Canada) 4–0. While the experienced Eugene fought for every point, Kanak maintained a consistently high level throughout the match and advanced confidently to the finals.
Hugo Calderano’s victory was expected, but it provided a valuable opportunity for Horacio Cifuentes (Argentina) to test himself against the World No. 3. With nothing to lose, Cifuentes gained crucial experience competing against one of the best in the world.
Finals: A Show to Remember
The finals thrilled spectators, beginning with an all-USA women’s singles showdown between Amy Wang and Lily Zhang. In a dramatic and evenly matched contest, Amy Wang edged out Lily 4–3, claiming the title and becoming the new Pan American Champion.
The men’s final that followed was especially anticipated by local fans, who had the rare opportunity to see a Top 3 world player face a Top 20 player live in San Francisco. With Kanak Jha having won their previous encounter, excitement and tension filled the venue.
After a tight opening, Hugo Calderano took control with his strategic mindset and explosive power, proving once again why he remains the No. 1 player in the Pan American region. His victory delighted Brazilian supporters and capped off a spectacular event.
